Using a mulch calculator is a great way to determine the amount of mulch you need for the project you are working on. The first step is to decide what kind of mulch you require for your project. You will want to measure the width and length in feet of the area where you need the mulch. Then measure the depth in inches. Typically, the average depth of the mulch should be approximately 3 inches. If you have decided to use hay and straw as the mulch material, you will need a layer of 4 to 6 inches. Hay and straw are a loose material and compact easily.

Once you have these measurements, the second step is to enter the numbers into the calculator and hit the calculate button. The calculator will display the amount of material needed for your project in cubic yards. Don’t miss the note below the calculator that tells you 18 bags of mulch equals 1 cubic yard. For example, if you entered 4 feet wide and 8 feet long, with a depth of 3 inches, the calculator will display that .3 cubic yards of material is needed for your project, which is 6 bags of mulch. After all of this measuring and calculating, you should be able to order the mulch you need and get your project a little closer to being completed.
